Alabama’s Dallas Turner on sports gambling: ‘We don’t stand for that’

Former Alabama baseball coach Brad Bohannon’s alleged actions and subsequent firing put a spotlight on gambling issues in college sports. Gambling problems haven’t been exclusive to Alabama or coaches, with athletes at Iowa and Iowa State now under investigation for impermissible wagering.

Crimson Tide linebacker Dallas Turner touched on gambling Wednesday at SEC Media Days in Nashville. He said the direction players received from Alabama staff was simple.

“Sports gambling is something that is prohibited for anybody playing at the University of Alabama and everything in the facility as well,” Turner said. “So we don’t stand for that at all.”

Earlier in SEC Media Days, LSU’s Josh Williams and Missouri’s Darius Robinson said players hadn’t received as much information as they should have in the past. Both of them said their programs have now made clear that sports gambling is impermissible.

Turner said Alabama players are on the same page on the wagering front.

“I feel like everybody on the team knows better than to do stuff like that,” Turner said.

Alabama players are not allowed to bet on any sport sponsored by the NCAA at any level, meaning college athletes are also unable to wager on the NFL, NBA and other professional leagues. They are allowed to bet on things like horse racing and card games that the NCAA does not sponsor.

Bohannon was fired in May during the baseball season after a probe on his alleged impermissible gambling activity. A report from Sports Illustrated said the former Alabama coach was providing insider information to a bettor who attempted to place a $100,000 wager against the Crimson Tide.
